About Bridging Ages
Bridging Ages is a community interest company based in Sussex, UK. Our mission is to bring old and young people together in the belief that intergenerational relationships are mutually beneficial and fundamental to a healthy society.
The idea for Bridging Ages originated in a conversation between three friends over coffee. Yet another report had just come out in the news about the increasing problem of loneliness in the older population. We could each name lonely people we knew of in our village or through work. They weren’t rich or famous people, but they all had such interesting lives and stories filled with fascinating historical details and personal reflections. Sadly, their stories and the stories of people like them are not being told. This is a loss for us all but especially for young people. We wanted to change that.
We have a Dream....
Our dream is for every older person in the UK (and maybe the world!) to have a Life Stories book.

When I was young, my grandfather told me stories about living through the Great Depression and his challenges working a small subsitence farm with a large family to feed. I was captivated. My grandfather was probably flattered by the attention of his granddaughter, but I believe he also felt a responsibility to pass on these stories to a me. It was mutually rewarding. Each time I read a Life Story book, I am reminded of this. There are many reasons why the Life Stories project is valuable. We try to quantify this in precise terms but the effects are really immeasurable. I think we can all agree that there is a great good in one generation talking to the other, appreciating each other, and creating a new – and shared – life story.

A background of many years in teaching and pastoral care roles led me to the Life Stories Project. It has been a pleasure watching the students and older people form strong friendships. Changing (and improving) attitudes between the two groups makes me smile. Our communities become nicer places to live!

As a strong believer in the power of story telling, and with a background in Book Arts and Design, it is amazing to help transform real lives into historical heirlooms. Throughout history, stories have been used to educate: from our shamans, to our village elders, they passed down knowledge from one generation to the next. I’ve enjoyed using the printed book as a tool to help re-kindle this, and witness new relationships grow.
Over the past year, two projects in Sussex have been piloting our new software. Both have given us terrific feedback on the programme and helped us improve the materials. Their student authors are in the final stretch and celebrations will be held in June and September.
We were also delighted to receive a grant from the Tudor Trust. Their funding will help us further develop Life Stories and bring it to more communities.
Bridging Ages is a small community interest company with a big idea. Your support will help us bring the Life Stories project to communities around the UK – and maybe the world! Please donate now and make US a part of YOUR Life Story!
